State Funds Mixed Up In Sarit Estate
Government investigators report they found about 20 million dollars in state funds mixed up in the estate of Prime Minister Sarit Thanarat. The scandal is described as Thailand’s biggest of its kind, prompting calls to strip Sarit of rank and honors posthumously and challenging Thanom Kittikachorn’s seven month administration to resolve the issue. Sarit, a field marshal who seized power in 1957, died of a liver ailment last December, leaving a legacy of a firm Western-aligned development drive and anti-Communist stance.
