Berlin marked the third anniversary of the Berlin Wall with a memorial rite for 53 people who died attempting to cross the barrier. Mayor Willy Brandt laid wreaths on crosses at a wall section as guards fired 160 flares overnight and public transport halted for the observance.
In Willimantic Connecticut Rita Racette, 9, fell from a stalled car into flood water and was carried 75 feet into a storm drain. Three men, one extending a stick, pulled her to land as she was drawn toward the Willimantic River. She was found safe at home in Springfield, Massachusetts.
London reports credit the Freedom Fixers gang with aiding the escape of Charles Frederick Wilson from Winson Green Prison. Wilson, 32, ex bookmaker and Scotland Yard’s most wanted, helped in the Glasgow to London mail train raid that netted about $7.28 million. only $840,000 recovered. An inquiry was ordered by Home Secretary Henry Brooke.
A Mississippi chancery judge banned operations of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party formed by civil rights leaders to oust the all white regular Democrats from the national convention. The injunction came as a federal suit sought to strike down 16 state laws hindering civil rights activities. Lawrence Guyot said lawyers would counter the injunction while Attorney General Jet Patterson obtained it.
Patterson and Gov. Paul B. Johnson are named defendants in a federal suit along with other state officials. Guyot would not say if Freedom Democrats officers would heed an injunction. A floor fight over the issue looms at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City starting August 24, with at least eight state delegations backing the Freedom Democrats.
Floodwaters from a brief storm swept Winslow Arizona forcing evacuations at Win slow Memorial Hospital where seventeen patients were moved by National Guard troops. The sewage outlets were blocked creating a sanitary hazard and twenty families evacuated to the armory as waters reached thirteen feet in the underpass.
Violence flared in a multi racial stretch of Elizabeth and a Negro district in Paterson. Police restored order after youths attacked cars and stores with bottles gas bombs and rocks. Dozens arrested. curfew possible for weekend.
Alice Lenshina surrender leader of the Lunda sect appeals followers to lay down spears from Lusaka Northern Rhodesia. She says government has guaranteed safety as battles claim nearly 500 lives and troops seek surrender dead or alive. She broadcasts urging peaceful settlement.
In Chicago, Secret Service agent Abraham Bolden, the first Black officer to guard a U.S. president, was convicted and sentenced to six years for attempting to sell government evidence in a counterfeiting scheme for $50,000. He apologized, pleading mercy to support his wife and three children, while the judge called his perjury a serious aggravation.
Cincinnati Reds manager Fred Hutchinson announced a leave of absence for at least the current road trip starting today. He will stay in Cincinnati while the team travels to Houston San Francisco and Los Angeles for the swing as he continues treatment for chest cancer.
A strong northwesterly wind swept in from Canada yesterday lowering Middletown’s high from 93 on Wednesday to 67 and a low of 49 tonight. Temperatures ease back into the 70s tomorrow as the cool spell continues.

About 100 helicopters airlifted troops 30 miles northwest of Saigon in the war’s biggest airborne push. Government units met little resistance as they moved through jungle, finding evacuated camps and four guerrilla bodies. A US helicopter pilot was killed with two Americans and a Vietnamese wounded.
