In a major air offensive near XA BA HAO Vietnam, about 3,000 Viet Cong were reported in a jungle area. Ninety six Vietnamese and US Army helicopters carried nearly 1,000 troops into the attack. A 50 caliber round killed a young US lieutenant at the controls during the initial strafing pass.

Saigon report says Communist China accuses the Soviet Union of being too cautious in denouncing the United States for the reprisal attack on North Vietnamese patrol boat bases. Maxwell Taylor in Saigon says the U S has sufficient military resources to repel any Communist attack on South Vietnam.
Maj. Ralph Irvin of Redding California was shot up but limped back to Saigon. His crew escaped injury as every available helicopter in southern Vietnam was mobilized for the operation. Heavy ground fog forced the helicopters and Vietnamese Air Force fighters to turn back from the assault zone.
Frantic radio chatter fills the air as a fleet of helicopters advances on an open field ringed by jungle and rubber groves. Maj McConaha orders a blistering strafing run while door gunners Barefoot and Serapion man heavy M60s amid smoke bursts and tracer fire from enemy positions.
Troop-carrying helicopters touched down briefly to unload their men. Only a few troops reported enemy contact during the operation.
Barry Goldwater disavowed extremists from both sides and pledged to consult with former President Eisenhower on Cabinet appointments if elected. He spoke at a closed door Republican leaders summit in Hershey Pennsylvania emphasizing unity.
President Johnson and the Defense Department rejected Barry Goldwater's claim that U S defense funding and nuclear capability are being cut. They called his charges false and said resources and sacrifices protect the nation from aggression as Goldwater warned of a decade with no new bomber.
Barry Goldwater argues that current defense leadership shows a disregard for new weapons and could reduce our deliverable nuclear capacity by about 9 percent over the next decade unless plans are altered.
Goldwater insisted there will be no extremist takeover of the Republican Party. He pledged to consult Eisenhower Nixon and other seasoned leaders before naming defense or state secretaries and favored an Eisenhoweresque foreign policy. He warned that opponents may claim a Republican victory would trigger war and called that the supreme political lie.
Chile severed diplomatic relations with Fidel Castro's regime leaving only Uruguay Bolivia and Mexico with Cuba. The move is tied to Chile's presidential race between Salvadór Allende and Eduardo Frei, with potential Cuban trade disruptions and a looming general strike by the Communist dominated Central of Workers. Trade between Chile and Cuba hovered around 10 million dollars last year and remains similar this year.
Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy intends to enter the New York race for U S senator. He told relatives and close friends and aims to announce next week with resignation as attorney general. A Wagner endorsement is anticipated and momentum in the state grows. Republican Sen. Kenneth B. Keating weighs re election. Kennedy said he would not run without Wagner’s expressed approval.
In Elizabeth and Paterson, violent disturbances erupted Tuesday night with gasoline bombs bottles and smashed storefronts. Paterson saw twelve incidents and three storefronts damaged while Elizabeth reported Band youths boarding a bus and wrecking windows as officials warned of possible further trouble.
Two fires started in Elizabeth firms with gasoline bombs and a third under a porch of a white resident near a public housing project. One store looted. Four people arrested in Elizabeth. A Negro man accused of looting a clothing store and three white youths arrested after a car bottle throw. A Negro man arrested in Paterson on a disorderly charge. Paterson lies about 15 miles west of New York City and Elizabeth about 20 miles south of Paterson.
A line of violent electrical storms swept Ohio, killing one inmate at London Correctional Institution. Highs dropped from 93 to 56, with breezy rain and hail reported statewide. Tornado clouds sighted near Conneaut Copley and Lake Erie but no ground touchdowns.
Charles Frederick Wilson, 32, serving 30 years for the Great Train Robbery, escaped before dawn from Birmingham Prison. Scotland Yard mounted road checks around London as investigators search for him amid largely unrecovered loot of about $7,025,000. Prison officials indicated inside help and a rope ladder used to breach the walls.
Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson a lawyer educator and former Brigham Young University president won the Republican nomination for Utah senator. He led with 61 113 votes to Rep Sherman P Lloyd 59 454 as record turnout swept across 1222 precincts. GOP leaders said the result bodes well for Barry Goldwater.
