T. rex teen growth spurt reshapes giant dinosaur view
New study in Nature shows Tyrannosaurus rex surged in growth between ages 14 and 18, gaining about five pounds daily to reach an adult weight near six tons. Researchers, led by Gregory Erickson, say the animal stopped growing around age 20 and likely died by 30, contrasting with elephants’ longer lifespans. The work analyzes 60 bones from 20 T. rex specimens including the Sue skeleton at Chicago’s Field Museum.
