Congress shows little appetite for broad new anti poverty programs beyond housing subsidies as the Poor People’s Campaign targets Washington. Debate centers on jobs income and education while war costs and a weak dollar limit new spending.
U S troops in the Delaware operation fly into A Shau Valley and seize a large cache of enemy supplies. Helicopters taking fire from antiaircraft suffered losses as the reconnaissance in force continued with light casualties and rapid enemy evacuation.
In Baden Wuerttemberg West Germany the ultra right party gained seats in the state legislature and achieved its largest vote share yet. Willy Brandt’s Social Democrats suffered heavy losses as the poll acted as a key barometer ahead of next year’s federal elections.
In a record 70.6 percent turnout from 5.6 million eligible voters, the CDU led with 44.2 percent as their chancellor Kiesinger coalition faced losses. The Social Democrats dropped to 29 percent, Free Democrats rose to 14.4 percent, and the ultra-right National Democrats won 9.8 percent taking 12 of 127 seats. The election followed Easter weekend protests and student demonstrations in West Berlin and other cities. Brandt's son Peter was among prominent demonstrators.
The region from Southwest Ohio to the Miam Valley will see cloudy and mild conditions with scattered showers tonight. Tuesday brings partly cloudy skies with little temperature change and a low near the upper 40s. The five day outlook calls for near normal temperatures Tuesday through Saturday, highs in the 70s and 80s, and lows in the 40s to 50s. Yesterday reached 67 degrees, with 43 this morning and about .20 inch of rainfall over the weekend.
Paris AP reports Dr Maurice Mercadier announced the first French heart transplant successful in a Paris hospital. The recipient Clovis Roblain aged 66 remains alive but complications raise uncertain survival prospects. The donor was a 23 year old head injury victim.

HONOLULU AP. Jack W. Karby 22, of Cleveland Ohio, died Sunday from injuries from a three vehicle crash Saturday night near Hauula Hawaii.
In Greenwood Mississippi a sustained boycott driven by the Black community and led in part by white Catholic priest Rev Nathaniel R Machesky has crippled Negro run businesses downtown and at a shopping center forcing white merchants to negotiate. The policy targets Negro trade with selective buying and public name readings of crossers while Johnson Street merchants reach a settlement to hire Negro workers and seek city council talks. The mayor rejects dialogue, citing outsiders and agitation.
Thomas Charles Fuller an 18 year old student was seized near Eastern Illinois University and charged with murdering five Cox children aged 16 to 5 outside their Mattoon area home. Police said the victims were shot in the head with a .22 revolver and two girls were battered. Louise Cox 16 was home but unharmed.
