Police moved onto Columbia University to end a week long sit in routing protesters from five buildings. About 100 women among 638 arrested and 15 officers injured during a 75 minute operation that began at 2 45 am.
U S embassy reports more than 1000 persons killed during February Hue offensive with mass graves and beheadings. Priests Father Urbain and Father Guy named among victims. Bombers strike across Laos and South Vietnam as troops sweep the A Shau Valley. college campus protests erupt at night with calls for Kirk to go.
The Miami Valley region sees partly cloudy conditions with little temperature change through Wednesday. Tonight’s low in the upper 40s, today’s high near the upper 70s, after yesterday’s high of 73 and a 52 degree low this morning, with no precipitation recorded in the area since yesterday.
President Johnson rejected a sweeping reform of the Selective Service proposed by a White House advisory commission. A three member task force including Hershey endorsed keeping the draft structure intact and Johnson approved their recommendations while Congress renewed the basic draft law leaving the existing local boards and regional setup in place.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 77, was taken by helicopter to March Air Force Base hospital after experiencing chest discomfort following a golf game. An aide said doctors favor observation and rest. no heart attack was suspected.
In Paris, Clovis Roblain, 66, the world’s seventh heart transplant patient, died eight days after a nine hour operation. Dr. Maurice Mercadier announced the death due to brain blood insufficiency as Roblain battled urinary and respiratory complications following the procedure. The donor was a 23 year old killed in a Friday car crash.
Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller announces active candidacy for the Republican nomination in Albany. He seeks party unity and a clear choice of candidates, opposing President Nixon’s White House bid and outlining a positive frame for his own credentials.
About 600 cadets at the Air Force Academy and nearby schools reported illness beginning Sunday. By Monday 99 cadets were hospitalized with sore throats, diarrhea, vomiting and fever. Public Health Service experts identified a streptococcus strain. Cadets received antibiotics and bed rest as emergency cots filled the academy gym.
