Prague AP reports Czechoslovak and North Vietnamese students protested U S involvement in Vietnam at the U S Embassy. After two North Vietnamese ripped the flag from the staff, a group urged not to defile the flag and apologized.
Miss Sylvia Hitchcock of Ohio and Middletown’s Melissa Rhode drew a 300 strong crowd at McAlpin’s in Middletown Shopping Plaza. Hitchcock, arriving by helicopter, posed in a white bathing suit and signed autographs while answering fans questions before boarding a helicopter back to Cincinnati. In Washington, Vice President Hubert Humphrey launched a three man presidential bid promising unity and peace over politics while aiming to outrun Kennedy and McCarthy.
Daylight saving time is underway with clocks advancing one hour in all states except Hawaii and Arizona. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 requires DST from 2 a.m. on the last Sunday in April to 2 a.m. on the last Sunday in October, though states may exempt themselves by legislative action. Hawaii and Arizona opted out.
U S and North Vietnamese diplomats met in Vientiane Laos on Saturday to pursue preliminary peace talks but remained stalemated over venue. Maj. Gen. Samuel Phillips announced a recommendation to NASA head Webb to skip a third unmanned Saturn 5 test and proceed to a manned launch later in 1968. A three man crew led by Lt Col James A McDivitt trains for an earth orbit test up to 14 days with Apollo craft.
A doctor vaccinated Willie the pilot whale with a six inch needle at Marine World in Redwood City. Bradford Baruhh of Marine World said the shot was to prevent erysipelas, an acute skin infection. Willie is healthy but authorities chose caution.
A march titled The Poor People’s March will depart Memphis for Washington D C, aiming to protest economic inequality. Six candidates vie for the Butler County sheriff nomination in the May 7 primary, with profiles on page 27.
