Massive tree planting weekend by Scouts and students in Middletown
About 32 000 pine white dogwood and redbud trees will be planted this Arbor Day weekend in Middletown by 3 000 Scouts from Butler and Warren counties and local Girl and Boy Scout councils. Seedlings will be distributed from the United Way Building at 9 am Saturday with planting at parks schools and streets across the area.

Ohio man held after Jackson officer shot during truck check
Lt. William James Nixon, 44, a 23 year Jackson Police Department veteran, was shot dead early today while checking a truck north of Jackson. A police helicopter later found a suspect hiding in a trailer wired with suspicious equipment. Timothy O'Brien of Van Wert, Ohio, was arrested as officers closed in.

Ehrlichman released from Swift Trail prison in Arizona
John Ehrlichman walked out of Swift Trail Federal Prison Camp at dawn after an 18 month sentence for Watergate involvement. He left in a maroon Chevrolet with Lois Boyles and her son Vance, followed by reporters. He declined to comment, saying he felt overwhelmed. Scaffold collapse in West Virginia kills dozens
A scaffold on a cooling tower under construction near St Marys West Virginia collapsed. Officials said 38 to 40 people died and 40 to 50 workers were on the scaffolding at the time. Survivors were not confirmed and a temporary morgue was set up at Belmont Fire Department. Workers were said to be from New Jersey and West Virginia.
