Clerical Collar Barred in New York Trial Court
New York appeals court rules that clergy attire in a criminal jury trial can prejudice jurors. The Rev. Vincent LaRocca, a Roman Catholic priest and lawyer, was barred from wearing his clerical collar by a lower court judge. The Appellate Division, in a 3-1 decision, said courtroom dress is a visible communication to jurors and may affect fairness.
