The report argues President Ford pushed a $722 million arms request to Congress to signal aid while signaling a larger goal: evacuating Americans in South Vietnam. Officials view the figure as a bargaining ploy and a way to keep Saigon hopeful, enabling time to move the 6000 Americans out.
The North Vietnamese forces began pounding Xuan Loc on Wednesday and attacked the eastern and southeastern city edges today. Cambodian government troops halted about 200 rebels near Phnom Penh airport with air and artillery, claiming 700 Khmer Rouge deaths northwest of the capital as they plan a counterattack to retake mortar range from the airport.
President Ford asked Congress for more than 722 million in military aid for South Vietnam plus 250 million in humanitarian aid and a new troop evacuation authority. Lawmakers forecast rejection of broader arms assistance but support limited power to evacuate Americans and some Vietnamese. Ford urged end of restrictions on aid to Turkey and waivers on trade acts, while omitting other flashpoints.
Robyn Trimble and Timothy Girton earned the 1980 W.W. Sebald Self-Reliance Awards at a Middletown ceremony. Trimble, a Middletown High School senior, is active in band, sports and church and plans nursing. Girton, a Madison High School senior, is an Eagle Scout and Demolay officer aiming for a service academy. First place received 750 dollars. other finalists got smaller honors.
Cincinnati based news report states the first new passenger steamboat in nearly 50 years will be christened Mississippi Queen on April 30. The vessel represents a revival of river transport with ceremonial rites planned in Ohio.
Today Inside 30 in Louisville highlights Kentucky Derby Week with a three way steamboat race on the Ohio River. The Delta Queen, Belle of Louisville, and Julia Belle of Peoria will compete as the Mississippi Queen debuts March 2 1976. Betty Blake reports ships will run on the Ohio Mississippi Cumberland and other rivers. Delta Queen exemption lasts to Nov 1 1976. new steamer name won via national contest.
