The Labor Department reports that U.S. unemployment climbed to 8.7 percent in March with eight million jobless. About 200000 jobs were lost while the labor force grew by 300000, raising unemployment by 500000 from February and lowering total employment to 83.3 million as six straight months of job losses continued.
A U S Air Force C5A Galaxy transporting 243 children and 53 adults to the United States crashed near Saigon. Initial reports say about 100 children and 10 to 15 adults survived. The plane struck sparks from a decompression problem and a wing fire before crashing short of Tan Son Nhut base. At least 73 dead, with 30 trapped in the wreckage. pilots said a rear loading door malfunction caused the crash.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio denied early consideration of a 74 million dollar rate increase by Ohio Bell Telephone Co. Two commissioners said it would be unfair to move ahead of other pending applications including a 216 million dollar annual request. Ohio Bell serves about 4.5 million customers in Ohio.
Clear skies and lows near 20s are forecast for the Middletown area tonight with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 50s expected Saturday. Yesterday's high in Middletown was 40, the overnight low 24. The extended outlook calls for cloudy skies Sunday and a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday.
President Ford and Secretary Kissinger opened conferences at Palm Springs aiming to salvage the Vietnam situation. They planned talks with Gen. Weyand about the Saigon mission and discussed broader Middle East issues ahead of a forthcoming state of the world address.
President Thieu announced the cabinet resignation and named Nguyen Ba Can, speaker of the lower house, to form a new government amid rising tension after major North Vietnamese losses. Viet Cong claimed control of Chon Thanh after a heavy siege.
President Ford orders rapid action to evacuate Vietnamese children amid escalating South Vietnam crisis. Navy assault ships load refugees off Phan Rang while aviation efforts, including private flights, move hundreds of orphans toward safety. Ford cites temporary refugee admission laws from WWII and 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
Field reports say the government abandoned besieged Kompong Seila 75 miles from Phnom Penh and evacuated thousands of troops families and civilians to the capital by helicopter and C123 transports. Villagers fled northwest of the capital enclave as reinforcements moved in to brace lines against insurgents who had fought two nights. Troops from Kampong Seila and Takeo joined the relief effort.
