About 400 people attended a memorial service in Xenia as a tornado watch was in effect and lightning flashed nearby. A reporter said attendees remained nervous yet proceeded with the service when word of a new tornado sighting in Warren County reached authorities.
A 16 acre vacant strip in Xenia Ohio still blocks progress a decade after a deadly tornado. A locally controlled group seeks a multi million dollar shopping mall but faces bureaucratic land acquisition cost delays and political opposition. Residents vary in support hoping the project blends with downtown while fearing a empty king lot for outsiders.
Fifty five Vietnamese orphans rescued from Saigon arrive at Oakland International Airport aboard a World Airways DC8. They travel on 90 day parole visas to await adoption by American families, with several already matched.
Odis and Myrtle Alexander were injured when a tornado and high winds ripped through the Waynesville area demolishing their Middletown Road home. Mrs. Alexander was in fair condition at Kettering Memorial Hospital. the pair were among dozens left in damaged residences and outbuildings.
Wayne Township records describe multiple tornado touchdowns southwest of Waynesville with damage along Township Line Road U S 42 42 and Ohio 122. Destruction includes roof loss to a home on U S 42 and a cattle barn, power outages, and relief centers set at the Waynesville fire station as emergency crews assess recovery efforts.
Partly cloudy skies and lows near 20 are forecast for Middletown tonight with fair skies and highs in the low 40s expected Friday. Yesterday's high reached 73 and overnight low 28 with 3 inches of rain recorded.
In South Vietnam no new government retreats were reported as North Vietnamese and Viet Cong consolidates after large territorial gains. About 50 000 troops stand 40 to 50 miles from Saigon with roads under Communist control. Saigon fortifies with 50 000 in the capital region, while Thieu faces growing opposition and a crackdown on demonstrations. The Viet Cong renews peace talks if Thieu is removed.
