For two and a half years ending July 1871 New York City saw debt rise by over eighty million in bonds and floats. In thirty-five months the Republican National Administration reduced the U S debt by over two hundred eighty million. Democrats seek national trust despite these results.
In thirty five months President Grant reduced the national debt by 27 258 310 dollars and secured an annual interest saving to taxpayers of 17 598 034 dollars.
The Gothic Hall barber shop and its bathrooms, after a complete renovation, are open and orderly. Proprietor Mr. Tremper is praised as attentive and honest, earning public patronage and a fair share of favors.
Personal, Mr A H Hall president of the New York State Editorial Association and secretary of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society, spoke on farming in a Watertown Farmers Club address. The Re-Union prints the full address as a strong, effective effort. Another note says Herbert B. Friend, son of Dr J D Friend, sailed for Hong Kong after several sea voyages and a love of life at sea.
In December a young woman eighteen, daughter of Maurice Royce near Wurtsboro, vanished. Her parents found the body in a coffin sent from New York, buried on Wednesday and exhumed on Thursday for examination and an inquest.
A Thursday evening fire at the Deerpark House in Port Jervis burned the hotel to the ground with some contents. Firefighters kept flames from spreading to adjacent structures despite a frozen hydrant delay. Cause unclear but deemed accidental. insured for 2400 dollars. Delaware House offered a free lunch to the fire crew.
On Thursday evening the M. C. C. held a ball with a large turnout of ladies and gentlemen, members and friends. The supper was described as especially elegant and the best ever served, reflecting credit on the earnest efforts and skill of the managers.

A severe blaze yesterday morning in Monticello destroyed four principal buildings after starting at 3:20 in the Sullivan County Republican office in Exchange Building. Fire spread to nearby residences and businesses. wind helped save the town. Losses included John Waller Jr and others with insured amounts varying. cause listed as unknown with foul play suspected. A prior Mansion House fire nearby prompted calls for a fire department.
Rev Mr Corey of the M E Church will speak tomorrow evening on The Judgment. Rev Mr Gunning will end his Miracles series at First Baptist Church tomorrow evening with The Gathering up of the Fragments. Rev Mr Harvey preaches tomorrow at 3 pm in First Presbyterian Church on The Kingdom of Christ.
The Last Night to witness Winchester or the spy of the Shenandoah will be performed at the Opera House tonight. Those who have not seen it should go and those who have should return as actors have improved. New features promised and the performance likely the best yet. Our brave boys in blue deserve public favor.
The General Term of the Supreme Court at Poughkeepsie affirmed Judge George’s ruling that the petition to bond Newburgh for 500 000 dollars in aid of the Newburgh and Midland Railroad did not represent a majority of the taxable property, despite a majority of axpayers. Justice Tappan and Justice Gilbert concurred. Justice Barnard dissented.
A sale of A H Taylor's trotting stock at Highland Mills Orange County yesterday saw 36 of 55 horses sold for nearly $20,000. Breeders aim to refresh bloodlines, as inbreeding has raised concerns of serious deterioration among Orange County stock.
The birthday of George Washington was only partially observed here as a legal holiday. Banks, the U S Revenue Collector's Office, the U S Assistant Assessors office, the Post Office, part of the day, and public schools were closed. The flag was displayed at several local spots including the Press office Halstead Sweet's Hotel Mill's Empire drug store and Steinhart's saloon.

Directors are jubilant over likely new connections and a West Shore line through to New York, West Shore, & Chicago, with a 27 million loan from German capitalists. Public overviews endorse Erie’s current management at town meetings along the route.
