Geography shapes race bias in Gallup poll findings
The Gallup poll shows geography affects views on school desegregation. In 1954 most Americans favored the ruling, with 63 percent in favor and 31 percent opposed, while the South remained largely opposed though dissent rose. The piece notes business practicality of cooperation, ongoing Fifth Circuit arguments, and a New York Times editorial excerpt urging faster civil rights progress and NAACP membership campaigns.
