UN May Be Called to Settle Haiti Political Strife

The United Nations could be asked to intervene in Port-au-Prince to halt ongoing violence and political turmoil that has troubled Haiti, described as a Negro republic, amid unrest reflecting deep national tensions.

NAACP Bills Die as Legislature Fails to Act

Bills aimed at restricting lawsuits and regulating charitable and legal groups were killed in the Louisiana legislature last Saturday as measures targeting anti NAACP activity stalled. Provisional President Fignole pledged elections soon while former senator Louis Dejoie urged UN mediation. The house moved to extend the investigative committee but three broader bills died in committee, drawing criticism from Judiciary members over potential rights loss.

Woman Killed in Highway Crash Near Andy Town

Mrs Bertha Jarvis 54 of 1376 NW 71st street died instantly in a traffic crash one mile south of Andy town on U S 27. Her husband James and Leroy Roner 33 of 1105 NW 68th street are in critical condition at Provident Hospital Ft Lauderdale. State Trooper Maurice DuPont said truck driver Carl Laird 53 hit the rear of the car. No charges filed pending statement from the injured.

Stewart Fired as Edward Waters College Proxy Fire

A Monday dawn blaze left more than 75 families homeless in Belle Glade as three two story buildings burned in the Negro district about 2:45 am. Fire Chief L E Will said the cause had not yet been determined. The frame structures stood central in the district.

PTA Council to honor Mayme Williams Monday

The 10th district PTA Council spanning Dade Broward and Monroe counties will honor Mrs Mayme Williams on Monday June 3 with a program in the Booker T Washington Auditorium She is retiring this year as president of the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers and has been prominent at county state and national levels. The Jacksonville board of trustees at Edward Waters College considers leaving the presidency open and has fired Dr W B Stewart, while management will meet to name a new head. observers expect Bishop D Ward Nichols might import a candidate from another district.

Diggs Urges Tallahassee Negroes to Use Ballot Power

In Tallahassee the Inter-Civic Council weeklong observance opened with Diggs urging Negroes to unite for voting and economic cooperation to advance integration. The event, May 26 31, highlighted church support and Negro owned businesses as keys to ending Deep South segregation. A Detroit youth, 17, confessed to attacks on 20 women over two months and a killing, saying he raped seven and cut three, with victims aged 24 to 68.

Additional classrooms will be added to three schools during the next year. Dunbar Elementary will get 10, Douglas Elementary eight and Booker Washington School.

Orr Wins Rights Award From Florida Anti-Defamation League

Florida representative John B. Orr, noted for opposing segregation measures, received the Leonard L. Abess Human Relations Award at a Sunday ceremony in the Algiers Hotel. Orr predicted Gov. LeRoy Collins would approve the “last resort” bill permitting counties to seek abolishment of public schools if segregation ends.

Bus Driver Stabbed In Miami Transit Holdup

A Miami Transit bus driver, Leslie B. Benedict, 39, of 535 NW 115th St, was severely stabbed during a Sunday holdup at NW 17th Ave and 79th St. He was listed in serious condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital with wounds to his left arm and chest. Police described the attacker as about 5 feet 4 inches, 125 pounds, wearing a white shirt and hat and black pants.
