United Fund Invites 46 Groups for January Drive

The United Fund of Dade County invites 46 charitable health welfare and community organizations to negotiate participation in the first United Fund Drive in January. Final acceptance will come from the UF board of directors.

Hockett Case Dismissed in Municipal Court

In a municipal court ruling Judge Mitchell Goldman dismissed the disorderly conduct charge against Fred P. Hockett who aided picketing at Frank Legree’s home. Affidavits alleging prejudice were signed by Hockett and David I. Hawthorne. Goldman refused to recuse. Two women in the case, Anna Hill and Mary Fitzpatrick, received 30 day suspended sentences and probation.

Agencies Invited to Negotiate With United Fund Panel

Two Hurt In City Accidents Near NW 22nd and 70th

Little Ardis Mae Anderson, 4, of 2159 NW 70th st, ran into a car on NW 22nd ave and 70th st last Friday and remains in serious condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Marvin C. Hicks, 38, of 1775 NW 113th st, driver of the car, faces no charges. William Miller, 29, of 814 NW 3rd ave, lost his left leg after falling from a loading platform at Cort Packing Corp into a switch engine.

Four men receive prison terms under new narcotics law

Judge George W. Whitehurst sentenced Earl “Wahoo” Robinson to 10 years for heroin selling, with accomplice Lawrence Costello getting five years. Willie Mae Lloyd pled guilty to marijuana possession, and Arthur Butler drew a two year minimum on a heroin charge. All are linked to a Chicago-connected mob and prior offenses.

Ghana native plans new study path after BTW High grad

West Palm Beach Judges Unconstitutional Golf Ban

Mrs. W A Scott Sr and party vacationing at New Smyrna Beach as Federal Judge Emmett C Choate ruled West Palm Beach Negroes cannot be barred from city golf facilities. The decision cites unlawful segregation and may lead to appeals or use of previously approved referendum authority to sell or lease the golf course and Howard Park pool.

Pool In Hot Water Again At Liberty City Amusement Park

State Attorney General Gerstein reports a Sunday raid on the privately owned Pool at Liberty City. Agents found about 250 persons, many drinking whiskey and gambling in violation of state laws. Owner Murray Blane, 42, was arrested on charges of beverage violations and permits infractions. A June 14 hearing in Miami will determine license status and penalties.
