Crazed Gunman Shoots Three Men In Atlanta

Adolph Milton, 30, opened fire in Atlanta wounding a White policeman and two Black men, Clarence Davis age 30 and Willie William age 70. After a brief chase Milton was captured at his sister’s home. Patrolman Rhodes suffered a gunshot to the head and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Memphis State School Denies Entrance to Two Negro Women

Memphis State University denied entry to two former Wellesley and Spellman graduates Miriam Sugarman and Maxine Smith for its summer undergraduate program. The women said they may appeal in federal court. A prior court ruling rejected the university’s gradual desegregation plan.

Governor vetoes last resort school closure bill amid tensions

Governor Le Roy Collins vetoed the Legislature's last resort bill for public schools in a time of racial tension. Valedictorians Named at Northwestern and Booker T. Washington

Willie Mae Alexander graduated Thursday night as valedictorian of Northwestern Senior High. She participated in Future Nurses of America Y Teens Science Club and Hospitality. Anne Riou, daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Riou, earned top honors at Booker T Washington. She belonged to the Spanish Club and Allied Youth and will study foreign languages at Talladega College this fall.

Pioneer Principal Grace Albert Honored at Garden Party

Grace Albert, pioneer principal of Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, is transferring after 22 years to Brownsville Elementary. On May 30 she hosted a garden party at her home to thank staff and introduce her successor, Elizabeth Beppy, with many district leaders and teachers in attendance.

Alabama Church Bombers Go Free

In Montgomery Alabama two white men Raymond C Britt Jr 28 and Kenny K Livingston Jr 19 were acquitted by an all white jury of bombing a Negro church and a taxicab stand. The short deliberation and white courtroom crowd amid fear of race riots marked the verdict. Prosecution warned of possible unrest if not prosecuted.

Supreme Court weighs state power over NAACP access

The U S Supreme Court agreed to review a case from Alabama where the NAACP faced bans on operating and was ordered to submit member names and addresses. Alabama officials had barred the group from doing business and fined it for contempt after it refused to comply within a set date.
