Carpenter Ants Endanger Sequoia Giants in Park

In Sequoia National Park California National Park Service hired myrmecologist Charles David to study carpenter ants blamed for hollowing and toppling ancient giant sequoias. Twenty giants toppled in six years with a 60 year old woman killed by a falling tree in 1969. Ants hollow trunks while decay from roots also contributes. Human activity may drive ant concentrations. David notes ants march in columns up to 200 per minute and rely on aphid honeydew for food.
