Two firms near quarry must move for flood control reservoir
Two Thornton firms Hulett Corp and Standard Wire & Steel failed to delay the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District from condemning 35 acres near the Thornton Quarry. Judge Ronald Riley ruled no delay, with blasting to begin and relocation to South Holland underway. The 8 billion gallon reservoir is part of a three‑part Deep Tunnel project to treat and discharge sewage tainted storm water into Lake Michigan. Mayor Jack Swan criticized the timing, noting the firms have barely months to move, while the village filed a federal suit against the MWRD and Army Corps to block phase two.
