Suburban Grants Favor Some Cook County Areas
Richton Park and other south suburban communities fared well at a public hearing on federal community development funds. The Cook County advisory council reviewed a nearly $40 million proposal, with the county share around $15 million, and will forward its recommendations to the county board for HUD submission in Washington D.C. Local favorites included Chicago Heights 1.4 million, East Chicago Heights 50,000, Hazel Crest 332,546, Sauk Village 165,000, South Chicago Heights 284,780, and Steger 432,150, plus Thornton 22,500, East Hazel Crest 27,500, Park Forest 213,457, and Richton Park 100,000. Positive intergovernmental funding for Hazel Crest and Country Club Hills totaled 19,000.

Youth Dies After Lake Rescue
Richton Park boy James W. Tucker age 11 died Friday at Olympia Fields Osteopathic hospital about 24 hours after being rescued from a lake in the Lakewood subdivision. He had been in critical condition on life support in intensive care since the rescue. Police and fire crews responded after reports of trouble near the lake as youths dove from a rubber raft. Tucker was recovered from the water along with others. The incident followed Thursday’s call and ongoing hospital treatment for his injuries.
