A large gathering of Irish-Americans at the Chicago Auditorium protested coercion laws in nine Irish counties. Orator Bourke Cockran, returning from London, argued that Ireland lacks land and government control under alien rule and urged American support to aid Irish rights and restoration.
The June 4 declaration defines just cause in section eight of civil service rules as any non political or religious reason that promotes service efficiency. It states no requirement for witness examinations or hearings unless the removing officer deems it necessary, aligning with a similar interpretation by the civil service commission.
Rehearsal of the coronation procession for Westminster Abbey followed the May 27 walkthrough. The second day’s pageant rehearsed the full route with all stops and formalities, though it was smaller than the final parade set for June 27, taking about four hours.

The Baltimore and Ohio railroad announces new division freight agents for several divisions. H. M. Matthews takes Pittsburg and Con nellsville with office in Pittsburg. W. L. Cromlish serves Pittsburg and Western from Pittsburg. O. A. Constants is assigned Cleveland. D. G. Gray handles Newark with Columbus office. C. T. Wright runs Chicago division from Sandusky. The Tifa, Ohio division freight agency is abolished.
The United Presbyterian General Assembly discussed overtures toward union with the Dutch Reformed Church. Rev. Dr. W. W. Barr announced he would not seek re election after nine years as missions secretary. A ruling on the Wallace case was adopted, with proceedings moving to Lake Presbytery and Jamestown church by controversy.
A tornado struck Louisburg near Platteville on Monday causing major damage to barns and outbuildings. Farmer Edward Ward was inside a barn when it collapsed and died.
New York, June 4. The stock market showed little interest and a languid price movement. Only a few trades occurred in St Paul and the day reflected narrow buying by small traders amid firmer undercurrents and concerns over corn supplies and higher money rates.
June meeting of United States Steel directors saw William F. Dodge and Percival Roberts resign. Robert Bacon of J P Morgan & Co. replaces Dodge, while James Gayley becomes director replacing Roberts. Gavinley remains as first vice president in charge of mines and railroads.
Washington reports the house committee on military affairs voted to table resolutions of inquiry to the war department about Cuban expenditures. Democrats announced minority reports. Resolutions sought detailed Cuba spending, salary data for Governor General Wood, and a list of officers retired after promotion.
Washington June 4 The house began consideration of the anti anarchy bill after the judiciary committee reported a substitute for the senate measure Mr Ray of New York led the bill and argued the senate measure was unconstitutional Mr Lanham of Texas backed excluding anarchists but opposed making it a special offense to kill the president or anyone in the presidential line of succession stating that all men are equal before the law and existing laws can punish such acts
In Portland on June 4 incomplete county returns show Governor race tightening as Republican Furnish trails Democrat Chamberlain by about 500 votes at 9 p.m. Complete results could overturn the lead. In Pittsburgh on the same date, engineers review plans to fund a $5,000,600 railroad improvement including a large steel viaduct over Silverlake, river bridges at Brilliant or Forty-third street, and new East End tracks.
Washington June 4 the Lodge Philippine government bill passed the Senate 48 to 30 with three Republican votes against and one Democrat for it. Debate spanned seven weeks and two days as Lodge led the effort amid exchanges between Dietrich and Patterson.
The committee has repeatedly directed a key figure to testify but he has wired his inability to attend citing important business. After reviewing his reply to a Sunday summons, the committee believes he does not wish to appear. A further summons will be issued and failure to attend may lead to arrest. Announcement also notes Michael Herbert to become British ambassador and Senor De Ojeda to become Spanish minister.
Governor Nash lends force to the Secretary of State to speed up Willis law collections as state offices struggle with mail backlogs. Major payments arrive from Cleveland firms including the Cleveland Leader Company and National Screw and Tack Company. Officials say the Eastern Ohio DeArmitt strike ended by conference in Pittsburgh after a year of conflict cost the merger about 10,000 while DeArmitt’s costs exceed 100,000.
In Huntington West Virginia a leading coal operator says many individual operators will sign the miners demands by week’s end but some corporations and tied operators will not. In Keystone West Virginia twelve hundred Hungarian miners joined the United Mine Workers in the last day boosting union strength for the ongoing strike.
A mob overturned a wagon with meat on Kinzie street and stole the cargo as police dispersed the crowd. A pitched clash occurred at 45th Street and Central Avenue between Black strike support from St. Louis and striking yard workers, injuring several and possibly mortally wounding two. The attackers numbered about fifty.
Official reports say negotiations are under way between the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and the Postal Telegraph Company regarding operation of the telegraph system on railroad lines. The Western Union Telegraph Company currently runs the Pennsylvania railroad telegraph lines, with a contract ending in about six months.
Incomplete county returns in Oregon show Democrat Chamberlain leading Republican Furnish for governor by about 500 votes as of 1 p.m. with full results possible to change the outcome. The Republican margin on the rest of the ticket stands at no less than 10,000.
