London June 7 Sir Robert Giffen former president of the statistical society testifying before the House of Commons committee on steamship subsidies said British shipping changes stem from non subsidization factors. He noted slower British progress and faster gains abroad especially Germany. American owned ships under the British flag increased and he argued the U S would defend them as American property. He added subsidies are political not economic.
Youngstown reports a valley wide settlement ending a furnace strike. Independent furnaces and Republic Iron and Steel Company agree on a 10 percent wage increase for furnace workers on the same hours. Oliver Snyder Company and Stewart Iron Company in Sharon were last to sign. Valley output and limestone industry impacts noted, with Beasemer quoted at 20 per ton and total output around 2,500 tons.
The Married Ladies Altar Society of St Marys church hosted a Wednesday social that drew strong financial and social support. The lawn in front of the school was lit with electric lights while Harmonia band played all evening. Ice cream cake strawberries and lemonade were served. Proceeds exceeded 000.
Canton June 6 In common pleas court the civil docket for the coming week includes hearings of motion docket Monday June 9 with cases such as Toledo Mutual Sign and Adv Co v Clewell and others. The week features multiple suits and admr cases with several defendants and railway interests listed for each weekday.
The city reports 63 saloons in Massillon, averaging one per 200 residents and one per four acres. Police-compiled census under Mayor Beil recorded full saloon keeper names and locations for tax use. The county auditor requested a copy for liquor traffic tax work. no una licensed speak-easies are noted.
George A. Myers of Massillon won the Navarre village council bid to supply electric lighting at 35 dollars per light for 30 lights of 500 candle power. The only other bid was 62.60 per light by R. Robert Snyder of Massillon. Myers may form a light power company for Navarre or operate solo, with rights to serve private customers.
Funeral services were held at the residence of Charles Chidester at 14 Henry Street for Cooper Chidester. Ministers Rev B K Mahon and Rev N E Moffit led the service, with the deceased’s longtime blacksmith anvil present. Burial followed at Mt Eaton, his former home.
In Pittsburgh on July 7 the orphan court heard Dr. Walter Browning sue the estate of state senator C. L. Magee for a medical fee. He originally claimed $190000 for treatment in Philadelphia and elsewhere and has amended the charge to $350000. Exectors oppose the claim as sensational testimony looms.

Mount Pelee unleashed thick black smoke clouds yesterday after ten days of quiet. A sea rise of four feet alarmed residents who prayed in the streets. Natives fear the island will be destroyed on June 12 and plead for evacuation as authorities seek the cause of the sudden activity.
Postmaster J H Thomas of Navarre visited Massillon to discuss Navarre’s Fourth of July celebration with locals. The program aims for a sunrise salute, Oak Street Parade, baseball games, foot races, patriotic speeches, a tight rope act, possible balloon ascent, fireworks, and a platform dance to close the day.
A June 14 ceremony at Camp Chase cemetery in Franklin county will dedicate a monument to men who fought their country. Governor Nash will present the monument, General John B. Gordon will accept, and a Northern donor funds the gift. The event includes music by the Fourth Regiment band and memorial addresses.
Stark county prepares competing delegations for the Fifth Circuit judicial convention at Mansfield on June 18. Upham, the judicial committeeman, has named 23 delegates and 23 alternates. A delegation led by Henry L. Leahy and Robert Legg inspected machine mines in the Hocking Valley to determine actual wages and conditions. They toured Glouster Murray Nelsonville Athens and other towns before meeting state president Haskins in Columbus to prepare a report on machine vs hand mining.
