Old Abe the War Eagle of Wisconsin remembered
A detailed portrait of Old Abe, famed mascot of the Eighth Wisconsin and Eau Claire Eagles, recounts his life from nest purchase in Chippewa County through Civil War battles, his feats on the field, escapes from captivity, and ultimate preservation as a taxidermied emblem in Wisconsin. The piece notes his enduring legacy in Union morale and Wisconsin memory, and touches on other local notices including a pursuit of John Dietz, a postmaster’s near-miss, and travel fare ads.
