New York and world notes in a rural paper dated 1907
A mosaic of lightweight curiosities, trivia, and social quips from The Marshfield Times. Items touch on English tabloids, a Chinese college, a San Francisco death, a London art controversy, and reflections on public schools, emigration, and monarchs, with scattered biographical notes and jokes.

Monument for Dogs in Germantown Wister Family Tradition
The Wister family of Germantown continues a century old custom honoring deceased their aristocratic dogs with monuments. The Peale graveyard memorial and the white shaft mark linked lineage from artist Charles Wilson Peale to the Wisters, who keep a dog cemetery near the Peale homestead and Wister mansion. General, a past memorial, and a future Newfoundland are noted as part of the tradition.

Sherman named to Spanish treaty claims commission
Sherman, lieutenant governor of Illinois, has been appointed a member of the Spanish treaty claims commission at a salary of 34090 per annum. He accepts the vacancy caused by G J Diekema's election to Congress. The commission is led by former Senator Chandler of New Hampshire. Sherman has the backing of Senators Cullom and Hopkins. The office of lieutenant governor pays 1000 a year, so this post offers far greater remuneration and international importance. He is a cousin of former Gov Richard Yates and has lived in Sinnels since 1859. Yie was admitted to the bar in 1879 and began law practice in Macomb in 1882, later serving as city attorney and judge of McDonough county. In 1896 he entered the legislature and served four terms, was Speaker of the Forty‑First and Forty‑Second Assemblies, and in 1904 was elected lieutenant governor.
