Upham mill sold to Leather Co with June restart

The Upham Manufacturing saw mill and related assets pass to the United States Leather Company. Operations are to resume around June 10 with the same crew and scale, and no change in location or scope is planned. The Leather Company plans to keep the mill a public-spirited local employer and notes the Upham site as Marshfield’s pioneer industry.

Wisconsin Central Starts Through Mail Service Milwaukee Ashland

The Wisconsin Central inaugurated through mail service between Milwaukee and Ashland on trains No 11 and 12 Monday. Mail cars added due to time change of No 1. Late Milwaukee and Chicago papers arrive No 11 at 1 15 PM. early editions arrive No 1 at 8 45 AM.

Fortnightly Musical club staged Queen Philomel Twelve Dancing Princesses at the opera house Tuesday. A large invited audience praised the performance as finished and artistic with the cast, led by Seraphita and Irene, delivering polished portrayals. The Queen’s daughters escape nightly to dance until worn shoes, while a prince unravels the secret with an invisibility cloak and wins the youngest princess’s hand. The tale ends in enchantment broken and celebration.

Annual Convention of Elks in Wisconsin at Waukesha

The Wisconsin association BPOE annual convention will be in Waukesha this year. Committees decorate business blocks with Elk Colors purple and white and souvenir badges will be given to visitors. Several bands are engaged and a race matinee is planned at the fair grounds on June 5. A Marshfield Elks member will attend, with departures by Central road next Tuesday morning.

State officials issue circular to county clerks detailing amendments to wolf bounty rewards effective May 17 1907. Four dollars paid by county and four by the state for wolf cubs killed between March and November with verification required to curb fraud and ensure authenticity of scalps.

Ohmstad and Baker Guilty in Grand Rapids Burglary

The jury found Ohmstad guilty in a Pittsville cigar burglary case tried in Grand Rapids last week. Baker is ready to plead guilty and both face sentencing to the Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun by Judge Webb this week. About 15,000 cigars were stolen from Ottelie and Standall Company and shipped to Minneapolis to a saloonkeeper. district officials recovered them. Additional charges await prosecution after release.
