Mrs Elizabeth Rheiner deliberately killed two of her children by morphine and gas while attempting to kill her seven year old and herself. She recovered as police learned of the tragedy after a neighbor’s report. The husband, who had left her two days earlier, echoed the couple’s quarrel and both described the events.
The west end of A Conklin’s house was blown apart early Thursday by dynamite placed under the northeast corner. Conklin, who lived alone, had recently hired Mrs Stocking as housekeeper and claims to know who committed the act, promising to prosecute.

An Arbor reports early University of Michigan registration totals up to Saturday night with 1 196 in Literary, 248 Engineering, 436 Medical, 604 Law, 232 Dental, 69 Pharmacy, 621 Homeopathic and a total of 2 937. Last year on a similar date totals were lower. expected year end enrollment around 3,534 with the summer school adding about 140. The catalogue for 1899 1900 will include summer students and project nearly 4,700 total, with gains in literary, law, medical and engineering departments.
A fire at the salt block of Davidson and Wonsey in Marine City started at 3 30 am Friday. The three story plant including sheds cooper shop and dock was destroyed along with 8000 barrels of salt and hundreds of barrels fell into the river. Lancing October 2 a writ of error has been granted to the supreme court of the United States in the Baldwin versus Baker case. The Michigan supreme court recently upheld the Bland-Allison silver dollar act as constitutional. The dispute arose from a 1396 incident when Baker then chaired the Democratic state central committee. Baldwin offered 600 silver dollars to settle a note secured by mortgage. Baker refused arguing silver was not legal tender. Local and state courts ruled against Baldwin.
In Owosso on Wednesday a jury awarded Sheriff Scougale $1,000 in the $10,000 damage suit against Rev. John Sweet who claimed the sheriff violated his oath by allowing a Sunday ball game on July 2. Sweet testified lack of malice, case to be appealed.
