Hendricks Death Shocks American Politics and Spain Crisis
The death of Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks at age 67 marks a pivotal moment in U.S. politics as the Senate prepares to name a successor. The report notes Hendricks long Democratic service, his war and Reconstruction-era national profile, and the potential implications for the presidential line. Also reported is Alfonso XII’s death in Madrid and Spain’s uncertain transition with a five-year-old heiress to the throne and a regency led by the queen consort, amid a controversial first minister choice.

Local items include sales, meetings, and travel notes
City and vicinity items report car payment, jail painting, a one year subscription offer, an oyster supper, and seasonal farming tasks. Mentions include a post office opening time, school days, a dedication at Fredonia, club name change to Monday club, travel from Nebraska, and rates cuts by Western Union. Also notes convocation at Lafayette chapter, thanks giving visit, life policy payout, large barn completion, windmill installation, hunting trip return with nine deer, and property purchases east of the city with spring move planned.
Local notes mix with town news and accidents
An eclectic 1885 Jackson area column reports on a northern city land dispute for a city ditch, a Marshall visitor jailed for intoxication, a new ice house, a turkey shooting at the fairgrounds, a shooting accident at Convis, theater engagements, railway equipment, a Willard barn arson reward, cemetery vault work, a grocery stock sale, a Calhoun county agricultural meeting, a marriage, autograph request from Gen Sherman, the passing of D. A. Frink, printer work for Francis Labsdie, a blizzard tale from Lower Dakota, and clerical pass anecdotes with biblical quips.
Ghostly figure haunts city streets in strange sightings
A long local column recalls a Toledo Demon ghost seen at night and chasing and scaring residents near the courthouse, with details of its height and attire. The tale notes public curiosity and a vow to curb further depredations, while tying the incident to wider sensational city papers. Also covered are a Thanksgiving gathering for Rev Manville and Mrs Manville, along with probate judge comments and a lecture by Mrs Noble on the art of expression at the Opera house.
