At 2 am a blaze swept through the Metropolitan Hotel at No 12 North Seventh street. Minnie Sheriff jumped from a third floor window, survived with severe burns. James Tyman and others were badly burned. Rumors of murder and arson spread as firefighters contained the flames.
The murder of ex mayor aha Bowman, shot at his gate in the early evening, is linked to a political feud. The assassin fired as Bowman faced the back of his head, causing instant death.
