Duke Research Extends Reach Toward Absolute Zero
Duke University physicists led by Dr William M Fairbank have developed a heat rectifier device that directs heat flow in one direction to achieve extremely low temperatures. The four inch tube filled with liquid helium and a radioactive decay produced helium form aids study toward temperatures just a few hundredths of a degree above absolute zero. Low temperature research seeks fundamental insights into matter.

Economic Outlook Amid Inflation and Policy Shifts
Government and private economists warn inflation could sharpen under rising prices. The Federal Reserve lifted the discount rate to 3 percent, while banks push higher loan rates in a tight market affecting small businesses. The SEC tightens on small stock issues as Congress may act on relief for small business. Farmers face higher state and local taxes on land, and housing construction lags. Steel mills run near capacity with higher prices, and new auto models arrive by November with price increases.
