John Howard Todd in the Chicago Herald identifies Bellefontaine as Illinois’s first distinctly American settlement, predating New Design by about a year. Led by Captain James Moore, the party arrived in 1781 and wintered at Kaskaskia, with Shadrach Bond and others joining the march from Virginia.
The narrative recalls New Design's rise with James Lemen Sr and early Baptists including Josiah Dodge and David Badgley. It notes 1790 ransom for James Smith, 1793 Kinney’s arrival, 1796 induction of the first Illinois Baptist church, 1797 Potomac colonists’ harsh trek, and Thomas Ford’s 1804 Illinois beginnings. It also recounts Samuel Magner’s Kenesaw signal tale as shared to local G A R and W R C members.
Edgar Summers of Martinsville Illinois advertises real estate loans as some of the safest investments, inviting inquiries for any loan amount.
