In a December 4, 1902 note from Down Memory’s Lane the Ladies Aid reports a successful Fair held Thanksgiving Eve, with Miss Mayme Randolph and Mrs Ethel Bierce providing music. Gross receipts reached 130 dollars.
Shelled corn at 55 cents per bushel oats 27 cents rye 42 cents per bushel observed in local grain market notes. Prices reflect wholesale trading and regional availability for farmers and traders.
On Monday night December 8 1904 Easter Star Lodge elected W M Mrs Mary Hilst W P Otto Hilst A M Henrietta Schoneman Con Mrs M A Wright Sec Louisa Knollhoff Treasurer Mrs J B Meigs for the coming term.
The brick masons are finished with their tasks on the Pollard Block and Hillings men will soon complete the work. The Lumber Yard will be covered with sheds to protect lumber. Contractors Hill and Brenner are finishing the new Jacob Roush home.
In Manito, a new altar and fixtures were installed at the Catholic Church with Rev. Father McGreevey supervising. Work was carried out by R. A. Hilling and his crew, as residents converge on the scene near William Watson’s reward.
December 10, 1908 Bill Vogel defeated Philip Lineweber in a long corn husk ing contest at Pete Emig's place in the South Swamp. Vogel husked 151 bushels to Lineweber 139 bushels after seven hours. The piece notes Manito's bright future as 12,000 acres in Spring Lake Drainage Dist will be opened for farming with five dredges building the levee along the Ili river.
Socially the week featured a house warming for Mrs Ed Horrom hosted by Mrs Tom Dyson and niece Beatrice Dyson at Chandlerville. Miss Freda Farnum led a Senior Class event midweek. Fred Schnelle marked his 33rd birthday at his sister Mrs Martin Dreyer’s home. Mayme Randolphs piano recital is set for tomorrow night at Manila Community Express. A quail dinner was hosted by D P Black with guests Mr and Mrs R L Mahr Mrs Ray Hodkinson and Mike Bowler family.
