Wild Garlic Discovered as Weed Threat in Canada

Agriculture officials report wild garlic found in two southern Ontario areas this fall. Dairy cattle fed hay contaminated with the weed produced garlic flavored milk rejected by a local dairy. Plant researcher G A Mulligan calls it the first Canadian weed record and notes its threat to wheat and forage fields. Bulbil bulbs enable seed spread and garlic flavor in grain products.

Net Farm Income Not Improved in Canada Says Experts

Canadian farm income will likely not rise much in 1971 despite higher feed grain prices and increased international movement. Dr. Glen R. Purnell and Cliff Cranston state forecasts show modest gains at best. They note strong demand for rape seed, potential higher acreage for sunflowers, and a steady livestock market with beef, lamb, and pork prices staying firm. Hog prices may rally late in the year as marketing slows, while egg profits suffer from rising laying pullet numbers and a persistent egg price drop despite the chicken and egg war headlines.

Reserve fund under scrutiny by Commons committee

Auditor-general Maxane Henderson urged the Commons public accounts committee to scrutinize a 220 million reserve fund built up by the treasury board. He noted funds left over from contingency votes were moved to the reserve and argued money not spent should return to the treasury under the Financial Administration Act. He said no illegal activity was proven, but parliamentary control may be weakened. MP Jack Pembina urged MPs be notified of new procedures by underlining them in votes.
