He urged vigorous mechanisation of outreach, noting communities have personalities and can sell themselves through organized persuasion to attract visitors, improve services, and boost local enterprise.

Hospital Central Aid Holds Regular Meeting

The Macregor Hospital Central Aid held their regular meeting on January 10 with all aids represented. Reports covered December wildlife association dinner December home coming tea and January firemen's ball. They thanked donors to the Christmas card fund realizing 133.37 and 1810 toward an air cooler for a ward.

Sunflower Seeds Sold To Japan

Federal Grain Ltd announces a record sale of 22 million pounds of sunflower seeds to Japan for the 1971 72 crop year. President George H. Sellers says the contract requires 30 000 acres to grow and that negotiations have spanned two years. Sunflower seeds are used to make edible oils.

MacGregor Club 62nd Annual Men’s Bonspiel Opens Next Thursday

The MacGregor curling club hosts its 62nd annual bonspiel February 11 to 14 with four events and four prizes each. Entry is $16 per rink, closes February 10 at noon, and prizes plus trophies await winners. A buffet lunch is planned for Friday. ladies’ event follows February 19 to 21.

Meeting Discusses Hiring A Recreation Director

On Wednesday January 27 about 30 people met in the municipal office chaired by Reeve Jim Duncan. Representatives from Rural and Village Councils Aust in Recreation Committee Mac Gregor Recreation Committee and Rossendale Recreation Association attended to discuss hiring a part time or full time recreation director. A 6 or 7 member commission from the associations plus rural and village councils and possibly the school division will pursue the idea.

Studs Wall at Border draws Canadian strike remarks

Manitoba highways minister Joe Borowski criticized Ontario for planning a border ban on studded tires, likening it to a Berin wall. He condemned requiring Manitoba drivers to change wheels before crossing and said action may follow when border stops occur, noting Ontario ministers’ stance on exemptions. He had hoped Ontario would not enforce the ban with support from Saskatchewan Alberta and Quebec.

Mmacuregor 4H Club Plans Ice Capades Trip

The Mmacuregor 4H Light Horse and Pony Club held a January 25 meeting and reported majority of members will travel to the Ice Capades on January 31 meeting at noon to board a chartered Webb bus. January activity was a pot luck supper January 22 with 55 in attendance. A snowmobile party is planned for February 21 at Harold Poyser's. Demonstration night is February 8 at Wayne Moore's. Next business meeting February 22.

Grain Excluded From New Canadian Rail Freight Increases

Canada’s two large railways CP Rail and Canadian National say the six percent rise in normal and competitive freight tariffs does not apply to grain shipments within the country. The Railway Association noted the change affects about one third of freight traffic, with grain and flour between the U S and Canada and Canada domestic traffic largely unaffected. The increases target long haul shipments and are not required to be approved by the Canadian Transport Commission before taking effect. An estimated extra 25 million dollars in annual revenue is projected, while grain routes to and from the United States and within certain Atlantic areas may see different treatment under existing rates.

Midgets Edge Austin 9 8 In Close Jets Win

The MacGregor Jets beat Austin 9 to 8 in the MacGregor arena on January 28. The team scored late to tie and win in the final moments led by goalie Robin Aulan testing new skates. Bryce Frank Brian Tomchuk Brent Tomchuk Gordon Lye and Phil Davey scored with Lye and Davey achieving hat tricks. The Jets prepare for Neepawa in the provincial playoffs February 1 and 2.

Central Plains studies attract industry and site needs

A two day industrial development course led by Central Plains Inc and government departments examined economic fits for communities. Dave Hicks outlined the value of industrial parks and site requirements while Roger Wilson urged realistic planning through asset surveys to match four industry types to local prospects.
