The Lynden Public Library adds a family friendly list of new volumes and State Traveling Library titles. Membership remains one dollar per year with the library open evenings and Saturday afternoons.
Whatcom County banks report stronger resources as of May 4, with a total rise of 137,846.74 from the February 28 call. Individual town totals include Custer Blaine Ferndale Sumas Everson Lynden, with deposits and gains listed for each. Relatives celebrated C F Worthen’s 83rd birthday at his home, four generations present. Lynden High School educators and students enjoyed a Nooksack Mountain picnic exploring tunnels and trails.
An adjourned meeting of the Lynden Township Board of Review will be held at the Town Hall on Monday May 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. to hear complaints from residents dissatisfied with this year's assessment.
Lynden prepares a large Memorial Day observance with the G A R W A C American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary organizing. Hawley’s Hall is loaned for the day, and car owners are asked to provide vehicles. The full program will be published in the Tribune next week.
Republicans of Lynden district plan a big rally Thursday May 27 at the I O O F Hall to organize a Republican Club. Prof J C Herbsman will deliver the principal address at 8 o'clock, with women especially invited to attend.
Earlma Rusco was named winner in the eighth grade declamatory contest at the high school Monday night. Judges were Mrs. R. L. Averill Miss Hazel Lowrey and Miss Tilda Trump. The program featured music rby Florence and Freda Freeman and various readings and piano solos.
Mr. and Mrs. Nick Boerhave and Mrs. A Dunker, Mrs. C B Bay and Mrs. Walter Hemingway depart Monday for Seattle to attend the 87th annual Knight of Pythias and Pythian Sisters convention. Mr. Boerhave and Mrs. Dunker serve as Lynden lodge delegates.
Lynden residents were urged to minimize gasoline use for essential trips this summer. A petition drive announced a pledge to use autos only for business and to avoid pleasure driving until shortages ease. Signatures were sought at local banks and stores as Standard Oil works to boost supply and curb waste.
Applications have been received at the Tribune office for tuberculin tests on hundreds of Lynden cows. State inspectors will arrive next month to test cattle, with efforts to test every Lynden herd this year to stamp out the disease. Owners sign a formal waiver agreeing to comply with state laws and test procedures and to keep new cattle segregated pending testing. The farm is located in Whatcom County and owners provide herd details and premises directions.
Ebenezer Christian School ended operations last Friday with a pupils picnic on the grounds. Lynden Christian School remains in session through June 4.
C. M. Creamer returns from field visits to Puyallup and Lynden and declares Lynden's small fruit prospects superior to the Northwest. He notes a possible forty percent raspberry crop at Puyallup and urges readiness at Lynden Cannery for a likely record blackberry harvest despite earlier concerns. High sugar prices will not affect canners much thanks to pre contracted supplies.
Funeral services were held at Knapp's Parlors for Mrs Wallace Ackley who died in Bellingham at 57 years 21 days after a long illness. Born in Jones County Iowa she married Wallace Ackley in 1890 and moved to Lynden from South Dakota in 1914. A large circle of friends mourn her loss.
Miss Irene Cheney underwent an operation at St Josephs hospital Saturday. The report notes the procedure and the patient’s medical status without further details.
Mrs. Anna Hoksbergen and son Ivan visit H Bartelds. Clarke families travel to Mt. Vernon to see R E Clarke's father T M Wallace. Neighbors share meals and attendance at birthdays. club meetings planned at Axling home. Frences Knapp returns from university graduation ceremonies. Stremler, Jacobson, Randalls host guests. Ohmart to Bellingham hospital for leg operation. Bay returns to Seattle.
Assessor report shows about two of three homes in Lynden Township own cars. George H. Whipple found 270 machines, average value $600 to $700, total vehicle investment $175,000. Cattle numbers rise with 2708 cows valued at $80 each and 931 two year old heifers at $50. Poultry growth shown by 37,200 hens assessed in the township.
Graduates from Lynden High School gathered Friday for their annual alumni reunion at the school. The Class of 1920 joined the alumni, a banquet was held, and Charles J. Kamm served as toast master. Officers were elected and numerous class members from 1911 to 1920 attended.
Mr and Mrs Ed Fisher Mr William Fisher Mr Fred Rockey and Miss Elsie Sweet and Miss Edna Mackinnon returned Wednesday from a camping outing at Canyon Creek with family in attendance.
The Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters were entertained at the I O O F Hall Monday night. The program committee included Mrs. Ray Slade, Mrs. Harvey Slade, and Mrs. H B Steinhauer. The evening featured ecards and dancing.
Miss Luella Smith suffered a stroke Thursday night leaving her stricken with paralysis. Mr. and Mrs. John Zevenbergen drove to Seattle Tuesday to arrange shipping of their furniture to Lynden.
