Ranchers with property along the Nooksack River will convene Saturday night at 8 at the I O O F Hall Lynden. Delegations are expected from Marietta Ferndale Everson Lawrence and other towns to hear speakers on federal and state aid and river improvement efforts.
The Washington Farmer reports that Eastern Washington farmers oppose the Carlyon road bond plan of 30 million dollars, arguing it would only fund about 3 percent of state highways and neglect rural roads. It notes the stance of the Republican state convention at Bellingham and cites available revenues for road construction.
Lynden forms a baseball club promising major league caliber play and twilight games this season. William A. Fisher elected captain and William A. Meurer secretary. merchants favor closing early for six o clock games. First practice Friday at Hawley's Park, district players urged to report for Twilight League schedule with Northwest teams.

Lynden contributes five hundred dollars to the Armenian relief drive, the largest city donation in Whatcom County outside Bellingham. The sum comes from individual gifts plus the Lynden War Chest Fund, leaving $595.28 in the War Chest. The fund supported wartime charities, with the War Chest committee chaired by E Edson P M Serrurier W H Jackman H J Kok and Gerrit Koj. Mrs. Elliott Davis travels to Chicago after weeks with her parents Mr and Mrs A McDaniel.
Mrs. Madeline Bay of Lynden Lodge was elected Grand Chief, the highest office in the Pythian Sisters of Washington, at the annual Seattle conven tion. The Bellingham Herald lauds her ability and forecasts a successful administration and growth for the order. Also noted is the Kensington Club meeting at the Library being postponed until materials arrive.
A Sunday storm struck the Bruce barn, causing total loss of the structure and its contents. Three cattle outside were killed by lightning, with no insurance. Fire crews arrived too late. four windows shattered at the P A Clarke home and minor damage at the T J Nelson residence to screens and a phone streak.
The Lynden district Republicans plan to organize a G O P Club at the I O O F Hall tonight at eight. Professor J C Herbsman, noted Northwest speaker, will deliver the principal address and share insight into Republican plans and prospects.
The Farmers Mutual Telephone Company reports a nearly twenty percent increase in the number of telephones in its system for 1919. On January 1 the count was 2355, up from 2017 in 1918, with many phones installed since year start. Net income reached 3309.95, operating costs totaled 45818.67 and plant value stood at 67313.92 against debts of 32067.66.
Mrs. R. E. Charles of Portland and others visited neighbors in North Prairie. Numerous calls and gatherings mark a week of social activity with families including Clarke, Marks, Nelson, Bruce, Bartelds, Bruns, Axling, Stauffer, and Minor. A June 8 gathering is planned.
Little Lloyd Fredeen visits relatives in Bellingham while Maude Ericson returns from Everett. Walter Telgenhoff buys a new brooder stove after shipping 1000 chicks from Petaluma with only three losses. A double birthday at V F Randall home honors Mr Randall and Mr Axling. Ella Tyrall closes Wahl school's term and visits home. Dinner guests include Berthuson and Dixon families. A farewell for Mrs Harlander precedes a Seattle visit and possible return to Little Falls. Lynden will close all stores on Memorial Day to honor fallen service members. A Sunday memorial service at the M E Church will be followed by a Monday program at Hawley Hall featuring prayers, duets, recitations, drills, and music by local groups and youth organizations. Programs include Boy Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, and local bands with many community figures participating.
