Mechanical heart device at UT Southwestern shows progress
Dallas reports a new cabinetlike device called the copulsator at UT Southwestern Medical School as a step toward a total artificial heart. Dr. Winfred Sugg says the machine can rest the natural heart during healing or transplantation and may aid shock from heart attacks while the heart recovers. The project, costing about 250000, follows NIH backed work on artificial heart research and builds on prior pumps from Rice University Baylor College of Medicine and a Brooklyn team. The device has not yet been tested on humans.
