U.S. infantry clash with an estimated 150 enemy force 14 miles southwest of Saigon. Reports say 24 Viet Cong killed as infiltrators move on the capital. Civil defense drills are set today and Sunday as U S bombers strike targets east and north of Saigon in a push to disrupt enemy formations.
A scorching Friday push the Texas Panhandle into 100 degree readings across cities led by 103 in Lubbock. Amarillo hit a 10 degree high record, Wink 109, and Presidio posted the national high at 112 as forecasts called for more heat and possible storms on the South Plains.
A chartered airliner carrying Lions Club delegates to Dallas experienced a door opening 8 000 feet over southwest Missouri. Jerrold Potter of Pontiac Illinois fell from the aircraft and was killed. 22 passengers and 4 crewmen were unharmed. State patrolmen conducted a search for Potter's body as Potter's wife Terry remained comforted by a hostess.

U S District Judge Hal Woodward and former Abilene lawyer Eldon Mahon were sworn in Friday in Abilene to serve Northern District Texas. Woodward will hold court in Lubbock and Amarillo and Mahon will prosecute 11 counties, with ceremonies attended by Gov. Connally and many federal and state officials.
Woodward born April 8 1918 and Mahon born April 9 1918 are UT law graduates and longtime friends. Both served in World War II with Woodward as Navy lieutenant and Mahon as Air Force captain. Appointments by President Johnson were Senate confirmed. Woodward serves for life and Mahon for four years.
Miami Beach plans a high security perimeter for the Republican convention with flak jackets sniper rifles and a six foot fence hidden by hedges. Police chief Pomerance says security will be maximum yet low visibility and demonstrations will be prevented. City approves purchase of 40 shotguns 20 flak jackets three sniper rifles and 50 smoke grenades as part of security measures.
A two car collision at Farm Roads 1294 and 1264 north of Lubbock killed Donna Sue Sanders 29 of Portales and injured four others. Passengers Mary Feagly 18 Portales and Dorothy Diver 56 Lubbock were treated or in critical condition. Diver's son Gary Lee Diver 9 had minor injuries.
Police veterans and new officers doubt the effectiveness of Wichita Falls Texas gun registration ordinance in reducing gun crime. Col Dave Alford notes the law applies mainly to retailers and enables transfer of guns while remaining registered. The requirement list includes name race sex age height weight hair eye color military service, address history, occupation, fingerprints and signature. City Police Sea.
Texas senators killed the mini bottle liquor bill by a 14 to 17 vote, risking a second special session as Governor Connally offered no immediate comment. Sponsor Sen. Joe Christie said the measure is "dead until the next regular session" and no move to reconsider was planned.
May 1968 sees living costs up at an annual rate of over four cents on the dollar with clothing and food driving the 0.3 percent rise. Assistant Commissioner Arnold Chase cautions the upward trend will persist for months as wages reach a new high of 106.03 dollars weekly purchasing power slips 37 cents. The 10 percent income tax surcharge will cut take home pay and weaken demand for durable goods, including autos.
Democratic senators condemned the GOP bid to block President Johnson's Supreme Court picks Abe Fortas for chief and Homer Thornberry for associate justice. Senators charged political motives and warned against delaying vacancies in the dwindling term.
