Peace hinges on situation in turbulent Middle East
UN map marks the Middle East as very dangerous amid coups and nationalism. Egypt’s shift to Maj. Gen. Naguib is seen as potentially pro Western, while Arab-Israeli tensions, Tunisian independence debate, and Iran’s nationalist stance hinder a swift peace. UN envoy Riley keeps armistice efforts. Israeli ambassador Eban calls for regional accord and Western support to revive stability.
