H I Kiefer reports that Corbin holds a 872 vote lead over Preston Smith with 5,000 to 10,000 ballots still to report in the 28th district Democratic primary. Unofficial 3:30 a.m. totals show Corbin 18,272 and Smith 17,400, with several large Lubbock boxes among the unreported piles.

In a Manhattan hotel gun battle, FBI agent Joseph Brock died and Gerhard A Puff was wounded and captured after a raid at Congress Hotel on West 69th Street. Puff, 38, a top FBI wanted criminal linked to Western bank robberies, faced twelve agents. two women were arrested.
In Dallas on July 27, early Sunday returns show District Ten Civil Appeals contenders McDonald and Dawson close, with Dawson leading 20,489 to 20,270 as 11 of 16 counties report. District 7 results favor Northcutt over Moss 61 points to 7,161, while Bannenberg and Houston push the race toward a runoff with 6,267 and 5,964 votes respectively.
A O Curry of Lubbock led the race for the Lubbock County Republican chairmanship with an unofficial 183 to 53 edge over Watson Carlock after 19 of 33 precincts reported. Eisenhower supporters backed Curry as turnout remained light amid a Democratic primary conflict and GOP sessions congenial.
