Unemployment Expected to Fall Amid Regional Layoffs and Closures
Unemployment is forecast to drop in coming months as Kennecott and Phelps Dodge layoffs in the Silver City area and the Anaconda uranium mine and mill shutdown near Grants impact local employment estimates. Over the past year the top job gains were in eating and drinking places, oil and gas extraction, health and other services. Major losers since March 1981 include social services, metal mining and the federal government, each down by 1,000 plus jobs.
