Shareholders OK Bank Convert to New Mexico State Bank

The shareholders of First National Bank of Lordsburg agreed to convert to a state banking corporation under a New Mexico charter. The bank will be renamed Western Bank with the same board. Rex Kipp led dissent over loss of First National identity and lack of cumulative voting.

Longtime Lordsburg Resident Petra Camacho dies at 87

Petra M. Camacho, 87, died Friday at Hillcrest Hospital Silver City after an extended illness. Born January 1, 1895 in El Carel Chihuahua Mexico, she lived in Lordsburg since 1918. Survived by three sons Henry Robert Ventura Camacho all of Lordsburg, two daughters Adela Madrid El Paso and Vera Aguilera Colton CA, plus 30 grandchildren 76 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren. Funeral services held at Heather Chapel with pallbearers Michael Camacho Pat Camacho Dennis Estrada Edward Chavez Lonnie Camacho Gregory Aguilera.

Sarah Payne Services Held In Virden

Services for Sarah J. Payne were held Saturday in Virden. Born August 31, 1891 in Payson Utah she moved to Mexico with Mormon refugees in 1897 and returned in 1912. She married Junius E. Payne in 1913 and settled in Virden in 1915 guiding local development. Survives six sons two daughters a brother 52 grandchildren and 110 great grandchildren. Caldwell Funeral Home in Safford handled arrangements.

A regular meeting of the Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education will be held May 4 at 7 p.m. in the board room of Lordsburg Municipal Schools located at 501 W. Fourth Street.

Bill Sego Campaigns Locally in Lordsburg

Republican governor candidate Bill Sego visited Lordsburg on a Wednesday meeting Republicans and locals at El Charro. He outlined plans to boost Hidalgo County and Lordsburg, promote the Sego Housing Plan to create New Mexico jobs, linking housing industry growth to affordable mortgages. He predicted major changes in ten years and highlighted Hidalgo’s mineral and energy potential as a key resource base.

Traffic Fatalities Rise in March and Year to Date

Transportation officials report 7 fatal traffic accidents in March with 37 deaths and 82 fatal accidents causing 96 fatalities through March 1982, up from 85 deaths in 1981. Weekend and night multi fatality crashes are noted, with alcohol involved in the worst incident. A wind sail race is set for May 1–2 at Gary overpass on I-10 West hosted by the Optimist Club of Lordsburg, with registrations April 20 and prizes including 500, 250, and 100 dollars.
