Animal High Names Top Honor Students

Chris Dupnik and Timie Burk named valedictorian and salutatorian of Animal High School 1982 graduating class. Dupnik sports a 3.962 GPA, Burk 3.693. Both plan to attend NMSU with Dupnik on a tuition scholarship and Burk aiming for medical technology.

Munroe warns Tyrone workers over concessions at plant

Phelps Dodge President George Munroe told about 200 Tyrone unemployed workers that labor costs are the largest operating expense and urged wage cuts and cost of living adjustments to restart jobs. He cited 4 percent proposed wage reductions, company housing and medical benefits, and environmental rules as key issues. He warned the Douglas smelter may close by 1987 with a $500 million compliance cost, while US copper operations suffer from foreign competition and differing regulations. Plants reopening by June 1 seemed unlikely, with a one-year delay possible. PD has cut roughly 11 percent of salaried staff.

Lordsburg High School Alumni Meeting Planned at Civic Center

A meeting is set for Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center for Lordsburg High School graduates from the 1920s 1930s and 1940s to discuss forming an Alumni Association and possible all-class reunion. Former teachers and administrators are invited as well.

Lordsburg Board reviews the 1982 83 preliminary budget totaling 2,956,508 with 913 projected students. Price notes local tax levy will yield 31,770 next year, down from 159,752 in 1980 81 and 61,738 this year, offset by state equalization. Staff planned at 65 certified and 29 non certified. Board set May 18 to review final operational budget.

Tovar Conviction Set Aside by New Mexico Court of Appeals

The New Mexico Court of Appeals on May 6 set aside Victor Tovar’s habitual offender conviction from a November Lordsburg jury trial. The court remanded to discharge the defendant and vacate the habitual offender finding, reversing for lack of proof linking Tovar to the U Haul theft and noting the direct verdict should have been granted.

Absentee Ballot Deadlines Set by County Clerk Diaz

County Clerk Becky Diaz announces May 22 as the last day to mail absentee ballots and May 27 for in person absentee voting. Both deadlines end at 5 00 p m at the Clerk's office. Diaz notes only four requests so far this week and urges participation, saying the cost to taxpayers is about 1400 dollars.
