Cotton Council Urges Pest Control in New Mexico
Anthou gh Delmot Roberts chair of the New Mexico unit of the National Cotton Council says NM cotton farmers could have profited by an additional 2,079,000 dollars if pest control had been used, outlining potential gains and urging action.
Cotton pests threaten New Mexico yields and profits
Roberts announced a 1949 campaign by the Cotton Council to cut pest damage after last year’s losses in New Mexico averaged 18 cents per pound of lint and 5,000 tons of cottonseed not produced. Pests kept 11,368 bales of cotton and 5,000 tons of seed from market, potentially worth $1,728,600 in lint and $351,000 in seed value. Recommendations on control procedures are available through county agents or vocational agriculture workers.

Cotton pests threaten next season as losses linger
Mr. Roberts notes that 6.6 percent of last year's cotton crop, about 202 million dollars in value, was destroyed by boll worms, pink bollworms, and other pests. A mild winter may boost pest survival, and the Cotton Council warns growers to act now or face higher damage in 1949.
