New Food Stamp Law Increases Funding And Tightens Eligibility
President Carter signed a new food stamp law May 26 expanding funding to meet unemployment and inflation while removing about 800,000 people from eligibility and slashing costs by roughly 750 million dollars. The law raises ceilings for funding in 1980 and 1981 but tightens eligibility rules for many recipients and reduces benefits by canceling a cost of living adjustment.
