The City of Lordsburg calls an emergency in its garbage collection system and directs residents to bag all waste and place it in the alley for manual pickup over the next several days using alternative equipment.
The Las Cruces BLM EA examines oil and gas leasing in 33000 acres near Big Hatchet Mountains New Mexico and its impact on the desert bighorn sheep habitat. Alternatives include leasing with surface restrictions and a 2 mile no occupancy buffer, or denying leases altogether. Public comments run to June 23.
Lordsburn mayor Alan A Koff heads toward a council showdown over hiring a city engineer to replace three administrative posts. Councilor Herb Collins proposed elimination and replacement with an engineer, while Koff ordered ads halted. The dispute follows council majorities against Koff on prior rule and a pending budget impact. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in City Hall Chambers.
Hidalgo County commissioners held a brief regular meeting Tuesday approving a $21 045 bid from Lordsburg Auto for a new fair barn at Hidalgo County Fair Grounds. They discussed medical supplies for the ambulance service and liability insurance for a state supplied brush truck, to be housed in the Animas Fire District.
Robert L. Allgood of the New Mexico Commerce Department met 23 local citizens for open discussion on potential industrial development. Assets liabilities and possible solutions were explored. An organizational meeting is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center and all are welcome.
State Highway Department survey notes traffic on 110 interchanges near Lordsburg changed after new signing. Counts show overall off ramp flow steady, with more drivers using end interchanges and a slight rise in I-10 exits at Lordsburg. June 27 on site school district evaluation planned with Rebecca Delgado present.
Hidalgo County Democrats meet June 12 at 7 30 p m in the County Commission Chambers to elect delegates and alternates to the state convention. All interested Democrats urged to attend. A regional platform meeting follows in Las Cruces at the Holiday Inn Christina Room at 1 p m on June 14 for District six Democrats.
Lordsburg Optimist Club sponsors a full day of Fourth of July events starting at 8 a.m. at the public pool with a swimming meet and a seven mile run. Contests, food booths, a 9 p.m. firework display funded by the city, and a post event dance are planned with volunteers sought for judges, timekeepers, and booth setups.
