Smoking Restrictions Adopted for Gila National Forest
Gila National Forest Supervisor Ken Scoggin announced new fire and smoking restrictions effective 8:00 a.m. Friday May 30 for the entire Gila and the Apache portion it administers. Forest Fire Management Officer Don Webb explained fuels are dry enough to require caution. Restrictions allow fires only in designated areas with fireplaces or via forest permits. permits are free but may be denied based on conditions. Cooking devices using kerosene gasoline or gas are allowed. charcoal and wood stoves are restricted outside dwellings. No smoking is allowed in most areas except on paved highways, in parked vehicles, in designated campgrounds or with a permit in camp. Fireworks are banned at all times. Scoggin urged public cooperation.

Texas Company Sues Over Cable TV Dispute in Lordsburg
Communications Systems Inc files in Sixth District Court Lordsburg seeking about 189000 damages from Phelps Dodge Corp over a Playas townsite cable system. It seeks injunction to stop PD from installing another system and claims ongoing losses of 2052 monthly plus interest and fees. The suit traces to 1973 agreement with Leacom Inc, now assets owned and operated by plaintiff, alleging PD demanded unagreed services and rejected fair remuneration. PD allegedly won a default judgment nullifying the 1973 contract and ordering system maintenance for six months from Jan 2 1980. Plaintiff asserts it was owner/operator and not served, and questions search for its registered agent in New Mexico. It contends additional losses would occur if PD can deploy a different system. The Animal Board of Education will meet Thursday June 12 at 8:30 p.m. in the Junior High Library.

Lordsburg city councilors voted unanimously to settle a lawsuit with city judge Jesus Estrada for about 2300 in back pay, despite Mayor Alan A. Kott’s objections and inactivity in officially polling the group.
