Rock Island sale eyed to save troubled line
Southern Pacific seeks ICC approval to buy 992 miles of the Rock Island for 57 million dollars. SP argues the Golden State Route can be rebuilt to regain Midwest Pacific Coast traffic lost since 1969. Rock Island cites deteriorated track and aims to remain a steady 40 mph carrier while SP pledges faster, efficient service. ICC decision expected by March 19, 1980.
