Driver Education Planned For Summer at Lordsburg High School

Lordsburg will offer a summer driver education program starting the week of June 18. Students should meet Monday June 18 at 8:00 a.m. at Lordsburg High School. The $20 course fee will be collected. Ernest Renteria will conduct the program.

City Moves Closer to County Police Contract Lordsburg

The Lordsburg Council voted to approve a contract with Hidalgo County to provide 24 hour police protection from July 1, 1979 to June 30, 1980 at a total of 99,886.60 payable in 12 installments. The county would hire five full time deputies and run the sheriff's office, with Sheriff Gene Moore fully in charge. Mayor Alan Koff supports the agreement citing improved protection and city savings to fund raises.

Local Ranchers Oppose Wilderness Review Program

Almost 90 ranchers from Hidalgo, Grant, and Luna Counties spoke against the BLM Wilderness Review Program at a May 30 meeting in Lordsburg. The plan covers 434,190 acres to inventory roadless areas over 5,000 acres and roadless islands with wilderness characteristics, with a final recommendation timeline through 1991, and potential limits on ranch operations if designated. Local ranchers warned designations could hinder cattle, windmill, and fence maintenance, while others highlighted utility lines and police coordination concerns amid county-city agreements.

Mrs. Hazel Kinkema Dies in Grand Haven Michigan

Mrs. James Hazel Kinkema died June 1 1979 in Grand Haven Michigan after a short illness. Funeral June 4 at Van Zantwitch Chapel Grand Haven with interment at Lake Forest Cemetery. A Lordsburg resident for 30 years she moved recently to be near relatives. She was active in Alpha Upsilon Chapter of E.S.A. and the VFW Auxiliary.

Settlements Announced In Local Land Fraud Litigation

New Mexico Attorney General Jeff Bingaman announced a partial settlement in a Hidalgo County land fraud case. About 92 purchasers will receive cash rebates or discounted land. checks range from $40 to $8,688, representing more than half of the subdivision buyers. Some down payers may be eligible in a potential additional settlement.

Hidalgo County Logs More Cases Of Screwworms

Four screwworm cases were identified in May at the Deming identification center, three from Hidalgo County and one from Otero County, with samples from Animas Rodeo and Pacific Western Land Co.
