Local Ranchers Oppose Wilderness Review Program
Almost 90 ranchers from Hidalgo, Grant, and Luna Counties spoke against the BLM Wilderness Review Program at a May 30 meeting in Lordsburg. The plan covers 434,190 acres to inventory roadless areas over 5,000 acres and roadless islands with wilderness characteristics, with a final recommendation timeline through 1991, and potential limits on ranch operations if designated. Local ranchers warned designations could hinder cattle, windmill, and fence maintenance, while others highlighted utility lines and police coordination concerns amid county-city agreements.
