Amherst pays 90000 settlement over false arrest case
Amherst reached a 90000 settlement with Donald Margolis after a 2022 arrest for criminal child enticement that Oberlin Municipal Court later ruled could not stand because the charged law was unconstitutional. The suit against Amherst Police Chief Mark Cawthon and several officers cites false arrest and rights violations. Margolis, a 77 year old retiree and veteran, was briefly jailed and placed under GPS monitoring after letting a 12 year old sit in his vintage MG outside a local Dairy Mart.

Man faces 13 charges after two day police chase
A South Amherst man identified as Matt Dillion, 32, is charged in Lorain County Common Pleas Court with two felonious assault counts on a law enforcement officer, attempted felonious assault, two failure to comply felonies, four obstruction felonies, inducing panic, and several misdemeanors after a two day manhunt across the county. Bond set at $250,000 cash. Dillion arraignment scheduled. Additional charges may come from Oberlin Municipal Court. He also faces a misdemeanor sexual assault case and a warrant for failure to appear on a speeding ticket.
