Open Heart camp links officers with foster youths in Vermilion
For more than 50 years local first responders have loaded patrol cars with tents and gear for a five day camp at Mill Hollow. More than 30 boys aged 8 to 15 from Lorain County Children Services gathered with officers to share games cookouts and guidance. The Open Heart camp, rooted in the 1960s and 1970s, aims to provide role models support and a different view of first responders during a week away from home.

Longtime Wellington official Bernie Nirode dies at 82
Bernie Nirode 82 died Wednesday at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center after a long public service career in Wellington Township. He chaired the Rural Lorain County Water Authority Board of Trustees and served on the Herrick Memorial Library Board Lorain County Fair Board Planning Commission Wellington Chamber of Commerce Wellington Board of Education and was the township fiscal officer. He also was Lorain County Joint Vocational School’s first principal and a long time track and football referee. He mentored the township fiscal officer and sponsored local Kiwanis events.
